THE LEGACY · FAMILY-OWNED SINCE 1948
Three generations of hardwood lumber manufacturing in Winthrop, Iowa — and the operating school that built Balance Capital's founder.
SINCE 1948
Wieland & Sons began in 1948 with founder Harlyn Wieland and a small portable sawmill in Winthrop, Iowa. His sons built it into an incorporated family company, and the generations that followed grew it into a full-scale hardwood lumber manufacturer — sawmill, kilns, and wholesale distribution — selling across the continental United States and to markets around the world.
Michael Wieland served as a third-generation owner-operator from 2006 to 2024, spending eighteen years across management, production, and worldwide sales before completing a successful sale of his ownership in 2024 to pursue real estate full time. The lumber yard is where Balance Capital's underwriting standard was forged: operations first, discipline always.
WHAT IT TAUGHT
Running an industrial manufacturer means managing production schedules, global logistics, commodity cycles, equipment, and people — every day, for decades. That experience is the reason Balance Capital underwrites every investment the same way: if we wouldn't run it ourselves, we don't invest in it.
Wieland & Sons Lumber Co. continues today under family ownership. For products, capabilities, and contact information, visit the company directly.
